Take a 7X7 meter wood floor, dynamic, fast-paced music that runs for 1:45 seconds per routine, crowds clapping and cheering and athletes performing some of the most creative footwork, arm patterns and technical skills you’ll ever see all done with the biggest smile possible and you’ve got Sport Aerobics.
Described as the “toughest 2 minutes in sports”, Sport Aerobics is a performance sport originating from the traditional group exercise class. In the early 80’s at the beginning of the aerobic fitness movement, competitive aerobics was conceived by Howard and Karen Schwartz of the USA. In 1984, the first national Aerobic Championships were held in Los Angeles, California. Soon after in 1985, the sport migrated to Canada and Japan. Currently, over 40 countries are actively involved in Sport Aerobics. Regional and National championships are held annually in these countries. Top ranked athletes from each nation go onto numerous International events including;
Suzuki World Cup (Japan)
FIG Sports Aerobic World Championships (rotating countries, now every 2 years)
World Aerobic Championships (USA)
European Cup (Hungary)
A variety of International Open Championships i.e., Brazilian Open, Korean Open, Spain Open.
Undeniably an action packed event, competitive Aerobics continues to excite audiences worldwide. In a relatively short period or time, this sport has earned the respect and commitment not only of the athletes who compete in this sport of creative skill and dynamic strength, but also of all of its fans around the world.
